Introduction

The BTEC Higher National Diploma Certificate and in Hospitality Management provides a work-related programme of management studies that covers the key knowledge, understanding and practical skills required in the hospitality industry.

Duration: 1-2 Years Academic Level: 4/5 Awarding Body: Pearson

For detailed information about the course details, please refer to Student Handbook and Programme Specification at https://docklandsacademy.co.uk/student-handbooks-2

Course Objectives

To develop the knowledge, understanding and skills of learners in the field of hospitality management and provide opportunities for learners to gain a nationally-recognised vocational qualification to enter employment in the hospitality sector, or to progress to higher education qualifications such as a degree in a related area like business management or leisure and tourism management.

Progression and Awards

Students commence by enrolling on the Higher National Certificate (HNC) programme, and upon successful completion of units worth 120 credits at the end of the first year of study, progress onto the Higher National Diploma (HND) programme.  Having achieved 240 Credits, students are awarded the Higher National Diploma (HND). Students who are not able to progress or who wish to complete only one year of studies can be awarded the Higher National Certificate (HNC).  Where one or more units are completed but there is no further progression, students may claim the relevant unit certificate(s).

Programme Standard

The programme specification and individual unit specifications for this subject are set and issued by Pearson.  Academic Management and Teaching and Assessment align with and follow these standards.

Methods of Teaching

Each unit will be delivered in 3 or 6- hour sessions (depending on the weight of the unit) two days a week (Monday – Tuesday for Weekday Classes / Saturday – Sunday for Weekend Classes) for eleven weeks per 15 credits minimum totalling 60 guided learning hours.  Methods of learning include lectures, discussions, use of visual aids, websites and online resources, handouts of readings, exercises and worksheets, workshops, pair and group work, presentation, seminars and one to one sessions with the tutor.  Teaching aims to engage students as active learners.

In addition, students will need to carry out directed learning, including thorough research and completing their assignments in their own time during outside class hours.  During the term, specific amount of time is given in addition to class hours for individual tutorials whilst students work on their assignments.  This is designed so students can develop over the programme as independent learners.  Study skills training and learning support are provided with a view to increasing both technical or occupational subject skills and personal competencies such as critical thinking and communication skills.

For 2021 Autumn Term, we will be delivering the courses in blended-learning format as the method of teaching due to current Covid-19 pandemic conditions.

Methods of Assessment

Students will be handed assignment briefs after the second week of each term.  Assessment will be carried out using a wide range of methods, including evaluation of written reports, oral presentation and observations of practical work.  Students will be required to demonstrate that they have attained a good understanding of each module by meeting all the learning outcomes, as described in the unit specification in order to gain a pass.  Further advanced grades of merit or distinction may also be awarded to students who meet the descriptors for those awards detailed in the assignment briefs.

Once a student’s assignment has been submitted the tutor will mark and provide qualitative assessment and feedback in the form of written evaluations against each criteria given for learning outcomes.  The student will receive their feedback verbally as well as having reasonable opportunity to resubmit work if necessary.

All assessments will be based upon the tutor’s academic judgements, but these will be verified by both internal and external assessors.  Students are given the opportunity to appeal through both Docklands Academy and Pearson appeals procedures.

Minimum Benchmark Entry Requirements (BER)

You must be 18 years-old or over at the time of registration. All applicants admitted to the Academy must meet the entry criteria specified for each programme. Please see individual course details for the specific entry requirements of each course on our website, also the Academy`s minimum (benchmark) entry requirement on DAL Procedure 4.1 Enrolment and Selection.

The Academy’s Internal Evaluation

The benchmark entry requirements listed on DAL Procedure 4.1 Enrolment and Selection are only a part of the information we use to build a picture of the applicants’ academic ability and potential. That’s why, applicants who are eligible for application then:

· are invited to complete a written Entry Test depending upon their current qualifications, which consists of two sections: English Proficiency Test and Diagnostic Mathematics Test.

· (Following the written Entry Test) are invited for an interview which serves as both a need analysis questionnaire designed to identify their employment goals, academic and development needs, and an English Speaking and Listening skill test to ascertain their English Language level along with the written test.

Command of the English language is essential for BTEC programmes. All undergraduate (and graduate) level applicants (Home/ EEA/ ILR and Swiss national) whose first language is not English must provide recent evidence that they have an adequate command of both spoken and written English level B2 of the CEFR (Common European Framework Reference) for the programme of study for which they have applied or go through our Internal Evaluation Process.

Admissions via alternative criteria (BTEC Programmes)

The term ‘alternative assessment’ is applied to applicants seeking admission who hold qualifications which do not satisfy benchmark entry requirements or programme-specific entry requirements. All students offering non-standard qualifications are expected to demonstrate the same level of academic potential as those offering standard qualifications. To be considered for special entry, the applicant must possess one of the types of qualifications listed on DAL Procedure 4.1 Enrolment and Selection.

Conditional Offers may be granted on the basis that a student has shown adequate academic application but needs some assistance with their English prior to commencement of study. In this instance, English language support will be offered to the applicant (with an additional fee) until they reach to the entry requirement level for the course.

Cases for consideration should be submitted to the Academic Head via Admissions Team. Applicants below the benchmark level may not be admitted without the advance approval of the Academic Head. The full details of the applicant recommended for special entry should be provided to the Academic Head, whose decision in such matters is final.

Students wishing to study on a part-time basis should apply to the Academy directly. Requirements for admission for part-time study are identical to those applying for full- time study subject to availability at the time of the enquiry.

The Academy will make every effort to inform and warn students, agents or parents if there are any breaches of rules.  Reapeated breaches or incidents of gross misconduct may result in a sanction such as suspension or dismissal from the Academy.  In such cases students will not be reimbursed fees and the students may incur costs they will be required to pay.

Airport Transfers

We can help you arrange an airport transfer service for a fee upon request.  If you book this service, someone will meet you at the airport and take you to your accommodation.

Health & Safety

The Academy is fully compliant with all UK Health and Safety legislation with respect to adult and child safety including the implementation of a safeguarding and prevent strategy policy.  All contact staff have DBS police record checks and receive regular Health and Safety training updates according to the recommendations of relevant bodies such as English UK.

The Academy has qualified first-aiders and fire marshals.  Any medication that a student brings with them must be labelled in English and the Academy Welfare Officer must be informed.  Any medical condition including allergies must be declared on your application form.  Regretably any student arriving with a serious medical condition not previously reported on the medical and personal information form may be sent home with no refund of fees.

Force Majeure

In the event of ‘force majeure’ such as fire, flooding, infectious diseases and other events outside the Academy’s reasonable control which may cause the closure of the school, no refund of fees will be made to students, except at the Academy’s discretion in exceptional circumstances.

Disclaimer

All details are published in good faith as of July 2017. All programmes are subject to availability and minimum class numbers. We reserve the right to alter any particulars such as fees at the discretion of the Academy. We reserve the right to cancel any course or close the school for whatever reason. Should this be necessary, we will do our best to find an alternative course for you. If this is not possible, you may be able to apply for a refund. Please see our refund policy.

BTEC Higher National Certificate (HNC) and Diploma (HND) in Business (RQF)

For detailed information about the course details, please refer to Student Handbook and Programme Specification at https://docklandsacademy.co.uk/student-handbooks-2

Course Objectives

Students develop transferrable knowledge, understanding and skills to work in a wide range of business contexts. Students gain a nationally-recognised vocational qualification to enter in business, or to progress to higher education qualifications such as a degree in a related area such as business management.

Academic Management, Teaching and Assessment follow Pearson standards.

Methods of Teaching

Each unit will be delivered in 3 or 6- hour sessions (depending on the weight of the unit) two days a week (Monday – Tuesday for Weekday Classes / Saturday – Sunday for Weekend Classes) for eleven weeks per 15 credits minimum totaling 60 guided learning hours. Methods of learning include lectures, discussions, use of visual aids, websites and online resources, handouts of readings, exercises and worksheets, workshops, pair and group work, presentation, seminars and one to one sessions with the tutor. Teaching aims to engage students as active learners.

In addition, students will need to carry out directed learning, including independent research and complete their assignments in their own time outside class hours. During the term, specific amount of time is given in addition to class hours for individual tutorials whilst students work on their assignments. This is designed so that students can develop over the programme as independent learners. Study-skills training and learning support are provided with a view to increasing both professional and personal competencies such as critical thinking and communication skills.

For 2021 Autumn Term, we will be delivering the courses in blended-learning format as the method of teaching due to current Covid-19 pandemic conditions.

Methods of Assessment

Students will be handed assignment briefs after the second week of each term.  Assessment will be carried out using a range of methods, including assessment of written reports, oral presentation and observations of practical work.  Students will be required to demonstrate that they have attained a good understanding in each module by meeting the pass criteria for all of the learning outcomes.  Further advanced grades of merit or distinction may also be awarded to students who meet the descriptors for those awards as detailed in the assignment briefs.

Once a student’s assignment has been submitted the tutor will mark it and provide qualitative assessment and feedback in the form of written evaluations against each criteria given for learning outcomes.  The student will receive their feedback verbally and will also be given reasonable opportunity to resubmit work if necessary.

All assessments will be based upon the tutor’s academic judgements, but these will be verified by both internal and external assessors.  Students are given the opportunity to appeal assessment decisions through both Docklands Academy and Pearson appeals procedures.

Procedure 4.10 Refund of tuition fees

When making changes to this policy please consult the Refund Policy Changes Flow Chart in Policy & Procedures Folder 4, for further changes

Procedure 4.10 Refund of tuition fees

When accepting an offer of a place of study at the Academy, a prospective student is required to pay the full amount of the tuition fees for their selected course as set out in our most recent publicity material including the web site. Tuition fees, as agreed by the student in the Terms and Conditions and in the Learning Agreement signed on induction, will NOT normally be refunded.

This includes, by way of example only, if;

  • an international student obtains a visa to study at the Academy, enters the UK, but then chooses not to take up studies at the Academy
  • a student enrolls on a chosen course of study, is inducted into the Academy, but then discontinues the course
  • a student is removed from the Academy due to non-compliance with the Academy’s Admissions Policy 4. Such as Procedure 4.4 Attendance monitoring, serious misconduct or other similar reason
  • a student is continuously late or absent to an extent that prevents learning or is contrary to minimum requirements, which includes but is not restricted to those set by a partner college or other relevant body, or leaves before the course ends
  • the student changes their mind after the start of their course. They cannot, for example, reduce the number of hours they study per week and convert these into one-to-one classes. They cannot reduce the number of hours to study per day in order to lengthen the duration of their course (only applicable to English Language / DAL tailor made Courses)

The tuition fees MAY be refunded in special circumstances.  These include, but are not limited to, if;

  • a student wishes to cancel a booking and gives two weeks’ notice in writing before the start of the course
  • a student wishes to cancel an accommodation booking and gives one months’ notice before the start of the stay
  • a prospective international student has made a deposit of their fees, but then fails to obtain a visa to study at the Academy. In this case the student or his/ her consultant must send scanned copies of their DAL Offer Letter/s, Visa Refusal Letter and passport by e-mail to the Academy for verification
  • a prospective international student obtains a visa to study at the Academy, but then, before entry to the UK, decides not to take up the offer of admission
  • there are strong compassionate or health grounds, supported by the presentation of suitable evidence

In addition, the Academy MAY:

  • Where the Academy terminates a course which has already started, the student will receive a full refund of all amounts paid
  • Reimburse additional travel costs for students in an event of a change in the location of their course, or will make funding available to offset these additional cost (applicable to Higher Education students)
  • Commit to honour eligible students’ bursaries (applicable to Higher Education students)
  • Compensate maintenance costs where it is not possible to preserve continuation of study (applicable to Higher Education students)
  • Compensate for tuition and maintenance costs where students have to transfer to alternative courses or providers due to a closure of a programme, including payment to cover any tuition and/or maintenance costs incurred by a learner where these are of a greater value than they would have incurred had the Academy continued to deliver a course for which they were enrolled. (applicable to Higher Education students)

If after enrolment the student decides to withdraw from their course for any other reason, they will not get a refund.

An application for a refund must be made with the Tuition Fee Refund Application form (available from the website or in soft / hard copy via email on request) submitted to the Finance Department. A decision will be made by the Finance Manager, which is subject to review at the discretion of the CEO / Principal, whose decision is final, there being no further appeal. The decision will aim to take into account all the known circumstances and the overall reasonableness and fairness of the case.

A refund, if approved, will be limited to the tuition fees paid to the Academy less an amount proportional to the time spent by the student at the Academy. Please note the following is non-refundable: registration fee, accommodation booking fee and any bank charges incurred. The Academy shall not be liable in any case for monetary loss suffered due to currency fluctuations or any other consequential loss. Due to the above procedures the Academy requires a minimum period of 45 days to process any refund.

If a student cancels his / her course in writing via the Admissions Team at info@docklandsacademy.co.uk  in cases other than the visa refusal, the Academy will within the cooling off period issue a full refund minus registration fee (£50 for up to 4 weeks enrolment, £75 thereafter). If the course is cancelled outside the cooling off period but before the start of the course- a full refund minus £300 will be granted. The Admissions team will then send student an email confirming the status of the refund.

To whom refunds can be made

Any refunds can only be made to the original payer (the person who made the payment to Docklands Academy London) using the original method of payment (e.g., bank transfer, credit card). If the fees are paid by card, the refund will be made to the same card.

  • Refunds for students who pay their own tuition fees can be refunded
  • Refunds for students in receipt of tuitions fee loan from the Student Loans Company (SLC) will be processed directly by our partner college who has direct responsibility to SLC to deal with such matters and NOT the Academy (only applicable to Higher Education students).
  • Refunds for students whose tuition fees are paid by a sponsor (applicable to Higher Education students)

The Academy’s financial strategy is to ensure there are sufficient cash reserves within the Group of Companies it belongs to (five start restaurant group namely Tas, Ev and Hazev) for directly fee paying students and working capital at any one time to meet its obligations to provide refunds and compensation should the need arises. Students enrolled on programmes under partnership arrangements accessing funding through a partner will be treated under their relevant refund and compensation policy.

Refund policy for visa refusals (applicable only to Student Visitor Visa and Extended Student Visitor Visa)

If your visa application is refused we will refund your fees, with the exception of instances outlined in 5.3.1. You must apply for a refund before the start date of the course, using the Tuition Fee Refund Application form (available on request to info@docklandsacademy.co.uk)

If your visa application is refused on grounds of documents submitted were fraudulent, the Academy accepts no responsibility to refund.

If your visa application is refused on the below grounds, the Academy will refund full fees, minus £300 if we are notified less than 2 weeks prior to the start of the course and (£50 for up to 4 weeks enrolment, £75 thereafter)

  • You did not provide the necessary documents, or the documents were inadequate
  • You did not demonstrate adequate financial support (maintenance)
  • You applied for your visa too late
  • Any other reason

In order to reduce risk of visas being rejected The Academy strongly recommends getting professional advice from the local visa consultants or reputable agents. UK Visa & Immigration (UKVI) regulations are updated frequently, and while the Academy provides occasional general updates as a courtesy service to students, it is the student’s sole responsibility to ensure that they are familiar with the most up to date UKVI regulations. Students on a visa must familiarise themselves with UKVI regulations and at all times abide by the conditions of their visa. The Academy accepts no liability for incomplete or inaccurate visa applications being supplied.

If the Academy documents have been unsatisfactory and served as the reason for a visa refusal of the official refusal letter, the Academy is committed to a full refund.

Students intending to apply for a visa to study at the Academy are required to provide all relevant supporting documentation relating to previous qualifications and experience (if applicable). Where a student has failed to supply such documentation their application may be delayed.

All documents supplied to the Academy to support a student’s visa application MUST also be sent to UKVI/The British Overseas High Commission, to support their visa application. Failure to do so may result in the student’s application for a visa being refused other than in the circumstances specified under Clause 3. The Academy reserves the right to disclose students’ details, including academic progress and attendance rates, to the UKVI.

Please note that the average cost of living in London is highly competitive, and differs from area to area. Students are therefore advised to ensure that they research the area and these average costs before enrolling on any of the courses as well as seeking guidance in relation to expenditure from the UKVI.

Refund policy for courses purchased directly from the Academy

This section applies only to students purchasing the course directly from the Academy.

Bookings made remotely (by telephone, email, online except for booking in person at the Academy) may be cancelled within fourteen (14) days of the initial application via the Admissions Team at info@docklandsacademy.co.uk . This 14-day period is called “the cooling off period”.

If you cancel within the cooling off period, you must tell us in writing. Cancellations made by phone will not be accepted. You must keep evidence of your cancellation within the ‘cooling off period’.

For the avoidance of doubt this clause applies only if the student is not physically present at any time throughout the conclusion of the sale. Students will not be entitled to a refund if they cancel their course under this clause after the 14 day period stipulated above.

  •  Adaptation to the UK / Life in the UK test preparation

Adaptation to the UK: One of the problems faced by many people who
migrated to England is the foreign language and the other is the adaptation process to
the country. As soon as they move to the country, immigrants in Britain, as in many other
countries, face difficulties in establishing their lives in the UK such as lack of
communication and bureaucratic knowledge. This makes their adaptation to the country
more difficult. With this in mind, we developed a training program and curriculum under
the name of Adaptation To The UK, … This program aims to facilitate the adaptation
process of immigrants with their dealings at places such as the post office, police station,
NHS and similar government agencies from the moment they arrive in the country and to
improve them in communication by providing information about the rules and structures
on communication they will be faced with. The programme can be delivered both digitally
and face-to-face. In this way, immigrants will have the opportunity to complete this course
and adapt more comfortably before they come to the UK. Families and individuals living
here will have the opportunity to build their confidence taking this training at Docklands
Academy campus (or online) after the restrictions of Covid-19 are lifted. This program
offers 4 hours online or face to face session a week. Each session costs  £40.
Minimum of 5 enrolled students required to open these sessions.
·         Life In The UK Exam: We aim to provide this program to those who need to
adapt the culture of the UK and get ready for their Life In The UK Exam on the way of
citizenship. This program offers 4 hours online or face to face sessions a week. Each
session costs £40.
