Docklands Academy February Newsletter

It may be cold outside in London, but the English department is nice and toasty in our warm building and students are making great progress in both our Beginner and Intermediate classes. Our Beginner class are working on their spoken grammatical accuracy and fluency with a range of stimulating, real world settings used to provide meaningful context to their rapidly developing skills. Meanwhile, our Intermediate class is focusing on debating and offering opinions on a range of current topics. Bringing the world into the classroom is what we enjoy doing at Docklands Academy and students are excelling.

Higher Education

The fourth week of the semester has begun, and returning Business students are settling into their new classes. Classes are still being blended both on-site and online. Our blended learning programmes continue to include flipped classrooms, breakout room activities, quizzes, and peer-led discussions. Despite the fact that these have been difficult times for students, teachers, and colleges alike, there is much that the Higher Education sector has learned and can continue to develop in the future.

Social Calendar

Chinese New Year
31st January into February (Online)

Celebrate the Year of the Tiger, as London's huge Chinese New Year celebrations move online in 2022: The annual parade, live performances and festival have been cancelled, but you can still join the festivities with a special programme of activity on social media.

Usually, every year, hundreds of thousands of people descend on the West End to enjoy a colourful parade, free stage performances and traditional Chinese food, and to wish each other "Xin Nian Kuai Le" (Happy New Year in Mandarin) or "San Nin Faai Lok" (in Cantonese).
However, in 2022, the usual Chinese New Year celebrations have been cancelled. Instead, follow #CNYLondon on social media to enjoy an online programme of events and activities from 31 January, see a special television broadcast on 6 February and spot the London Eye illuminated in red and gold.

LGBTQ+ History Month (different locations)
1st February -28th February

Head to events throughout London celebrating LGBT+ histories, cultures and communities! Find gay tombs in Westminster Abbey, learn about Georgina Somerset — the UK's first openly identified intersex woman,  learn about the challenges faced by queer refugees and so much more! You can  attend a special series of Islington walks throughout February, as well as a one-woman lesbian cabaret! Van Gogh - self-portraits - Courtauld Gallery (Somerset House)
3
rd February onwards

Van Gogh - Self-Portraits takes as its springboard Van Gogh’s iconic Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, one of the most celebrated works in The Courtauld’s collection, and will bring together around half of the self-portraits Van Gogh created during his short years as a painter.

This will be the first time that the full span of Van Gogh’s self-portraiture has been explored in an exhibition. Several works in the exhibition were last together in Van Gogh’s studio and have never been reunited, until now.

COVID19 Update

The government has announced that the measures put in place under plan B in England will be lifted. You should continue to follow safer behaviours to protect yourself and others:
  • Get vaccinated and get your booster dose
  • Wear a face covering in most indoor public places and on public transport
  • Let fresh air in if you meet indoors. Meeting outdoors is safer
  • Get tested and self-isolate if required

You can stop self-isolating at the start of day 6 if you get 2 negative rapid lateral flow test results on days 5 and 6 and do not have a temperature. Tests must be at least 24 hours apart. If either test is positive, wait 24 hours before testing again.

From 27th January, you will not be required to wear a face covering, including in communal areas of schools, but the government suggests you continue to wear one in crowded and indoor spaces where you may come into contact with people you do not normally meet.

You’ll no longer need to show your NHS COVID Pass at venues and events by law.
