August Newsletter – 2024

It has been a bumper month in the English language department, with students from France, Algeria, China, Taiwan, Spain and Turkey all joining our sessions here at DAL. We have been enjoying the great weather with visits to the London Eye, Tower Bridge, Leicester Square and Picadilly Circus. Hospitality Management HNC / Level 4 students attended:

– a field trip to the Borough Restaurant and had a fruitful session with the restaurant manager on Managing Food and Beverage Operations.

Courses

English Language

It has been a bumper month in the English language department, with students from France, Algeria, China, Taiwan, Spain and Turkey all joining our sessions here at DAL. We have been enjoying the great weather with visits to the London Eye, Tower Bridge, Leicester Square and Picadilly Circus.

Higher Education

Hospitality Management HNC / Level 4 students attended:

– a field trip to the Borough Restaurant and had a fruitful session with the restaurant manager on Managing Food and Beverage Operations.

– an International Food Day event at Limehouse Library Hotel, where in groups they pretended to have opened a restaurant on a world cuisine of their choice,  designed a genuine menu, decorated tables accordingly and cooked the food at the Hotel’s kitchen. Each group hosted another group, tried to manage their customers’ experience and obtained feedback in creative ways.

Hospitality Management HND / Level 5 students – as a part of Career Development Days – hosted two guest speakers:

– Huseyin Aydemir / Head Chef of TAS Restaurants on “Creative Kitchen Management and specifically Commercial Kitchen Design”

– Dr. Tarun Pathak on “University Top-Up Programmes”.

We held several webinars to improve our students’ academic and professional skills, such as “Online Education Netiquette, GDPR, Paraphrasing, Writing CV / Cover Letter, Emotional Intelligence for Leaders”.

We finalised 2024 Summer Term with a great picnic at Millwall Park, where all of the Academy staff and students enjoyed the warm weather along with delicious food and beverages and challenging outdoor games.

Career Events

Docklands Academy London was delighted to participate in the Career Day at Trinity Church of England School. This event provided students with a valuable opportunity to explore various career paths and gain insights into different professions. Oyku from our team was on hand to share information about our educational programs, career support services, and the pathways we offer to help students achieve their professional goals.

Additionally, we had students who came for their work experience week and spent time at our academy with our partner restaurants and hotel.

We also attended the Ashura Day of the London Turkish community to represent our academy and present our courses.

Health and Wellbeing

August: Happiness Happens Month

August is celebrated as “Happiness Happens Month,” a dedicated time to focus on and promote the joy of living. This month-long celebration encourages individuals to embrace positivity, practice gratitude, and share moments of happiness with others. It serves as a reminder to find and create happiness in everyday life, fostering a culture of joy and well-being.

 

“Happiness Happens Month” invites everyone to reflect on what brings them joy and to engage in activities that uplift both themselves and those around them. By celebrating this month, individuals can create a ripple effect of positivity and well-being in their communities.

  • Student welfare services are available to all Docklands Academy London students who may be experiencing problems such as difficulties with coursework, problems settling in, homesickness, bullying, financial difficulties, health and wellbeing issues, family problems and any forms of abuse. The Academy is committed to providing comprehensive and confidential services to our students. Field Trips

June 2024

Westminster

This month, our English summer school took an exciting trip to Westminster. We explored the historic heart of London, visiting iconic landmarks like the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben. Walking through the bustling streets, we marveled at Westminster Abbey’s stunning architecture and soaked in the rich history that surrounds this remarkable area. The trip was a perfect blend of education and adventure, offering us a deeper appreciation for British culture and history.

National Gallery

This month, we embarked on an exciting field trip to the National Gallery in London. The visit offered a wonderful opportunity for us to immerse ourselves in the world of art and culture. As we explored the gallery’s vast collection, we marveled at masterpieces. The experience not only enriched our appreciation for fine art but also provided a vibrant context to enhance our English language skills. Engaging with the artwork and discussing our observations allowed us to practice our speaking and comprehension in a stimulating and inspiring environment.

The London Marathon
